THE WHITE HOUSE & HOLIDAY LETS

THE MAKING OF THE SECRET BURROWS

The main house probably goes back to the early 17th century and was believed to be the old Gatehouse to the main house at the top of the lane by the cliffs that have since been converted into several homes.  Records don’t exist as all were sent to Exeter for safe keeping during the Second World War and lost when the City was bombed. The Gatehouse then became the White House in circa 1820’s when it was converted to a Georgian Gentleman’s Residence, Grade 11 Listed. As a family we moved here in 2012 and began a complete restoration of the house, grounds, and converted the old dairy/garage to the Gatehouse Holiday Let. The ground to the rear was purchased and with the consent of the local authority we knocked through the period boundary wall and added the Stable Block. Shortly after the Hobbit Hole was constructed and the ground around landscaped accordingly. The Hobbit Hole is marketed as The Secret Burrow and was a challenging build. Cut into cliff rock that sits just below the soil a large retaining wall was made, the building resting on a large counterbalancing platform. The roof was designed to blend into the field around and slopes in all directions due to the curvature of the building. The whole building was undertaken to satisfy a desire to make something different and inspired from the books read while young – hopefully, you will also find it as much fun and unique as we do – enjoy your stay in North Devon, a great part of the UK.
